The Rochesteriat

The Rochesteriat

Sure, it's nice to get a coupon in the mail from Wegmans to save on cards this time of year, because who doesn't want to save a few bucks? Greeting cards can get expensive, but why not be a little more creative this year and support some local shops?

Here's a list of places to checkout BEFORE you think about going to Wegmans, Walmart or Target:

The Hub by Archimage

The Hub opened this past June and is full of great home goods and unique gifts. Check them out for not only gifts, but for some fun cards.

While it might be easy to be distracted by the clothing and jewelry on the first floor of Peppermint, head up the stairs to find some local goodies AND some hilarious greeting cards.

Details: Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter

Little Button Craft

Straight from the caption, because we couldn't say it better ourselves, "Still looking for that perfect card to say “Hey, I care about you!”...well they don't literally say that but you get the idea." Check out Little Button Craft for cards (and other things too).

Details: Website, Facebook, Instagram

Hart's Local Grocers

Check out the rack of cards at Hart's and then swing by the aisle with all of the chocolate bars (p.s. there's a ton on sale right now).

Brainery Bazaar

It's pretty convenient that the February Bazaar falls just before V-Day, a space full of local vendors is a great place to do some last minute shopping. While we cannot guarantee there will be greetings cards - you'll have lots of other options.

Celebrate the Arbor Loft Opening on July 25th

the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

When unique unused spaces are renovated and turned into something wonderful in the city, especially downtown... it's time to CELEBRATE! In the space above Hart's Local Grocers, former home to Craig's Automotive, Agathi & Co has taken over and created a magical, urban event space. Here are 4 reasons we think you need to celebrate the new Arbor Loft Opening on Monday, July 25th:

1. It's an AMAZING Space

The ROchesteriat

The ROchesteriat

Ok... we may have already hinted at this, but it's great! The space is huge, beautiful, unique and flooded with natural light.

the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

Fundraisers, charity events, weddings (ceremonies & receptions), galas... we're picturing them all and hoping we get invited to some events up here. Or maybe we'll just have to plan something ourselves.

2. It's run by Agathi & Co.

the Rochesteriat

"HUSTLE & HEART is what sets us apart"

That's her motto and we love it. This 5 year old event planning & fashion consulting company was started by Agathi Georgiou. Behind events like Greentopia's Dinner on the Bridge and the former From the Ground Fashion Show, Agathi & Co. now has their own venue.

3. It's the Grand Opening

the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

Monday, July 25th from 5-7pm is the official Grand Opening of the Arbor Loft and you'll want to see the space for yourself. The event is FREE, so come meet new people, bring your friends, have a cocktail, enjoy some hors d'oeuvres and support this new venture.

4. There's Going to be a Concert

Mandolin Orange | Website

Honest Folk is once again bringing together incredible music at a unique venue. This concert will follow the grand opening, with doors reopening at 7:30pm and with music by Mandolin Orange kicking off at 8pm. It is a ticketed event and we're offering our readers and followers a $5 discount, just enter the promo code "honest" when purchasing tickets to get this deal!

9 of the Easiest Hacks for Enjoying the City

IMG_2516.jpg
Downtown Skyline

Our lives are messy enough. But no matter who you are, where you live, or what you're up to, you know you're always looking for ways to make your life just a little bit easier and enjoyable. ALWAYS. How do we know this? Because EVERYONE is.

So it doesn't come as a surprise to us why we're seeing more and more blog posts, magazine articles, and Youtube videos about the "Best Hacks..." around. Hack this, hack that...they're all about spreading the information, shortcuts, and loopholes that may or may not be obvious, but will save you time, money, stress, or a combination of them all.

Yes, we're that friend. The one that gets you in the know. You'll notice that some of these are deals, others are just plain common stinkin' sense. All of them though, will make you see 9 of theEasiest Hacks (ok, more like easy tips!) for Enjoying the City.

And you might think to yourself that these are not really hacks if we're just telling people how to use things the way they're supposed to be used...but if a good portion of the public doesn't know how to read a parking meter, doesn't know how to Google inexpensive travel, or how to get discounts at the places we love the most around here - then these are serious hacks for life in the city - let's call them loopholes for making your life easier.

Parking

1. Read the meter!

Parking meter

Yes, starting simple. But seriously, READ THE METER! We can't tell you how many times we've seen good, hard-working, law-abiding citizens paying into the meter after 6pm. And paying anytime on a weekend or a holiday! Listen - for the love of sanity - please don't pay the government any more money than you need to.

For those who say there isn't any parking available in the city, we think that's absurd. There's parking all over this city, and if it's metered parking, it's FREE after 6pm on the weekdays and FREE on the weekends. Period. Boom, we just saved you $5 for a 2 hour show at Geva Theatre.

Travel

2. Megabus your journey

Megabus

Think options for traveling to New York City will cost you hundreds of dollars on Amtrak or the airlines? Not around here. We've seen fares on Megabus as low as $5 from Rochester to New York. I've personally scored a last-minute fare from New York City to Rochester for $25 - on the 20th of December! Whaaaaaaaat!

With only a simple pick-up spot and drop-off area (low overhead, keeps costs low), Megabus can be seen 1-3 times daily over on Broad Street between Chestnut and Broadway.

And in case you're wondering, no it wasn't a scary experience. In fact, in the 7-hour trip I managed to sleep a few hours during the early morning trip, grabbed a cup of coffee on the trip's one stopover, and I got all of my last minute Christmas shopping done online with their FREE Wi-Fi enabled buses. Oh, and no need to worry about going dark - all seats come with multiple power outlets.

Megabus it here!

Food (and more)

3. RYP Perks App

Hart's breakfast sandwiches

Do you ever go grocery shopping? Do you ever eat? Ok, here's one - don't you just LOVE the breakfast sandwiches at Hart's Grocers? We thought at least one of those questions may garner a resounding "Yes!".

So why aren't you taking advantage of RYP's mobile "Perks" app? It's FREE for download on Apple and Android devices, and it gives you a 10% discount off your entire order at Hart's - including fresh breakfast sandwiches and coffee! There's no catch to it, you simply download the app and you're in!

Even better, RYP Perks will give you discounts off of dozens of products and services throughout Rochester. So tell me again, why are you paying full-price for that?

Get the app here!

4. Hart's and the Rosie App

Rosie app

Speaking of grocery shopping (and Hart's!), why not skip this mundane task all together and have someone else do it for you? Hart's Grocers has teamed up with Rosie to offer you a simple, easy-to-use app that can be downloaded on your smart phone or computer so you can have your groceries delivered right to your door.

Save a few minutes of time in a day by ordering exactly what you need and having someone else do the heavy lifting. This would also keep you from spending frivolously on extra's while you're waiting in the checkout line.

Get the app here!

5. City Dining Cards & App

City Dining Cards

You may have heard us mention this before - City Dining Cards and App. Their new App is FREE to download, and it gives you a 20%+ discount to some of the most happening cafes, restaurants, and watering holes here around town. Again, stop paying full price for things you don't have to!

Last call: While the new app takes over, you can still purchase the last deck of cards that City Dining Cards will ever make on our own site. We have them on the Rochesteriat SHOP for the absolute lowest prices sold anywhere. We'll stop selling them after October 31st, the deals are good 'til the end of the year, so get the last of these cards that offer 30%+ discounts to some of the best venues in our city - SHIPPING is FREE too!

Buy clearance Dining Cards here!

Culture

6. Geva Theatre Volunteers

Democrat & Chronicle

What's the best way to get FREE stuff? Give of yourself freely! That's right, also known as volunteering. It should come as no surprise to anyone that the local not-for-profits around town need all the help they can get. And the theatres are no exception. Geva Theatre actively looks for volunteers to help them out and in turn, gives volunteers the opportunity to see the shows for free.

Have another favorite cultural institution that you wouldn't mind getting involved with? Contact them directly to see if there's a need for your services, you may be able to save BIG on theirs.

Start here for Geva info!

7. Eastman Concerts

Eastman School, Downtown Rochester

We've said this before, and we'll say it again: world class music + students = FREE concerts here in our city. During the school year, downtown Rochester is alive with some of the world's most talented musicians practicing their works. You get to take advantage of this by simply showing up. Yes, that's right, no tickets or advance anything is needed - just show up.

Most performances take place in the beautiful Kilbourn and Hatch Recital Halls. Come and go as you please. Check out the concert calendar to see what's playing, and make a date night out of it!

8. Your Local Library

the Rochesteriat

Everyone should have a local library card. Period. You know they have books that you can borrow. But did you know that there is an app called OverDrive that allows you to borrow ebooks, audiobooks, and videos from thousands of local libraries across the world, and you won't have to step foot inside a library to do this or worry about returning on time to avoid any late fees? Yes, you still need that library card to do this.

Secondly, when you are the proud owner of that library card, you'll have the opportunity to check out what's called the V.I.P Pass at your local Monroe County Library. Checked out like a book, this pass gives you discounts to the Eastman Museum, Geva Theatre, the MAG, and the RMSC - without having to spend a penny for that discount. At the Eastman Museum, for example, the discount is nearly 60% off a regular price admission for up to 5 people - better than a Groupon!

Get the app!

9. BONUS - Halloween Costume Sale!

Blackfriars Theatre Costume Sale

Still looking for that unique last minute Halloween Costume? Why not buy one and support a great local cultural institution at the same - Blackfriars Theatre! On October 26th and 27th, from 5-8pm both nights, Blackfriars will be holding a theatrical costume sale and you'll be able to snag something great for only $3 or $5 - now that's a deal. Go see their beautiful theatre and walk away ready for Halloween. It's a win-win.

We Tried The New Hart's Delivery Service...it's AMAZING!

Harts-mobile.jpg

the Rochesteriat Are you stuck inside and can't get out the door without trampling through 2 feet of snow covering the walkway? Need food, maybe um, to live?

the Rochesteriat

Why not let someone else do the dirty work...Hart's Local Grocers now has a plan to do just that. One week ago, February 4th, Hart's became the only grocery store in our city to offer online shopping with delivery service - via Rosie - right to your own door. You don't even have to leave your home or apartment.

Who, or what, is Rosie, you ask? Rosie is an Ithaca-developed online shopping platform that makes it all possible…but instead of telling you what it is, we wanted to show the process, and reveal how easy it really was to get our groceries delivered right to our door. Here goes:

Step 1: Sign-up online with Rosie

the Rochesteriat

OR,

 Download the Rosie App (FREE)

the Rochesteriat

Step 2: Start Shopping!

the Rochesteriat

Customers have over 10,000 items to choose from, the same ones that are available in the actual store. I really wanted an avocado, so I typed it in the search button, and...

the Rochesteriat

…Voila! All the results containing "avocados" came up on the screen. I simply highlighted the first box and then picked the quantity that I wanted.

Continuing on - I am a beer fan…but would I be able to order beer online?

the Rochesteriat

Absolutely, with plenty of options to choose from, just like being in the Hart's store. For my choice, I chose something local (no surprise there), and turns out the 3 Heads Rochestafarian was on sale! We're told by the team at Hart's that all prices in store (including sales and markdowns) will be reflected on Rosie as well, so don't worry about missing the weekly deals.

GOOD TO KNOW: online and phone app is synced by some cloud, somewhere

the Rochesteriat

So in case you're wondering, you can always start your shopping online and finish on your smartphone app, and vice versa. Rosie seems to be quite the smarty pants because she automatically saves your cart and allows you to resume where you left off - at a later time and on a different device - without you ever having to remember to save anything.

Step 3: Confirm your order

the Rochesteriat

The last thing I needed to do was to confirm my order to the address that I wanted it sent to, (with the option to gift the order to someone else), put in any special delivery notes (very important for the delivery team!), schedule the order (orders placed before 1pm can be delivered same day!), and pay. Simple as that.

Behind the scenes

the Rochesteriat

Now if you're ordering online and then going to pick-up in store, you will be greeted by the beautiful team at Hart's, always smiling, always welcoming. If, on the other hand, you are having your order delivered...

the Rochesteriat

…your items are picked, separated, and bagged in their warehouse...

the Rochesteriat

…housed into coolers or warmers if needed...

the Rochesteriat

…and finally loaded up for delivery into the Hart's Mobile.

Last Stop: DELIVERY!

the Rochesteriat

With a greeting that cannot be mistaken - the excitement and smiles of Hart's employees - it has become a part of their brand in everything that they do.

the Rochesteriat

The final steps of delivery include signing for the groceries -

the Rochesteriat

- and getting your license photocopied (if you have alcohol delivered).

the Rochesteriat

Here is my avocado...

the Rochesteriat

…and the rest of the groceries. Needless to say, it was a really easy process and we were impressed.

More Information: There is a service charge of $1.99 for in-store pick-up using Rosie, and a minimum $3.99 service charge for delivery. BONUS: Get a one-time FREE delivery anytime this month with PROMO code: FEBDELIVERY EXTRA BONUS: For all you RYP'ers, be on the lookout in the new RYP Perks App for another Rosie Delivery Promo Code coming soon.

To say the least, We Hart Rosie! We thank the incredible team at Hart's - including Andrew Katz, Phil Knuepfer, and Jesse Fewkes - for all their hard work with the Rosie service for our city, and for delivering our groceries right to our door.
